Does eradication of Helicobacter pylori increase risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma?

Gastroenterology
These findings will lead to a great sigh of relief among all who treat Helicobacter pylori infections. Their conclusions are strengthened by the simultaneous failure to associate eradication with any trends in the incidence of squamous cancer and their description of the expected association of adenocarcinoma with GERD. As stressed by the authors, their findings are not the absolute final word - longer-term follow up of even larger patient numbers will, in time, provide this.

Agonists of the opioid δ-receptor improve irritable bowel syndrome-like symptoms via the central nervous system

British Journal of Pharmacology
Irritable bowel syndrome is a common condition that is challenging to treat, and novel drugs are needed for this condition. Previously, a chronic vicarious social defeat stress mouse model exhibits IBS-like symptoms. Also agonists of the opioid δ-receptor exert anti-stress effects in rodents with minimal adverse effects. In this study, researchers evaluated the effects of δ-receptor agonists on the IBS-like symptoms in cVSDS mice.  Read More

Efficacy of alternate mucosa-submucosa clip closure in preventing postoperative adverse events for patients with gastric mucosal lesions after endoscopic submucosal dissection: A multicenter retrospective study

Therapeutic Advances in Gastroenterology via SageJournals
Endoscopic submucosal dissection is the first-line treatment for gastric mucosal lesions. The artificial ulcers caused by ESD can lead to bleeding, perforation and other adverse events. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of alternate mucosa-submucosa clip in preventing adverse events following ESD for gastric mucosal lesions.  Read More

Applying the estimand framework to inflammatory bowel disease clinical trials

The Lancet
Since the first, seminal randomised controlled trial in inflammatory bowel disease in 1955, the central tenets for high-quality clinical trials have been recognised as robust and appropriate design, conduct, analysis and reporting. The research question to be answered affects all these areas. However, recent data have shown that the primary research question in an RCT is often poorly specified and unclear to readers of trial reports. In IBD, this lack of clarity might be, in part, due to the increasing complexity of clinical trials; therefore, increased methodological awareness might assist clinical readers in understanding and interpreting the findings from such trials.  Read More
